1 - School and water for the children of Adonago (Quakayto)Tigray Region, Ethiopia
"A growing child can change the world and helping a child to grow means helping the world!"
The aim of this project is to build a school for the approximately 300 children of Adonago, an isolated village in the mountains of the Tigray region, in the remote province of Irob. The construction of sanitary facilities as well as a water well and a rainwater collection system will ensure a safe water supply for some 700 villagers. Two years ago, the local community built two classrooms with simple stones where lessons for children could be held.
At least three (3) large classrooms, duly furnished and equipped with toilet facilities, are required to ensure education for at least 300 pupils. As this is one of the driest areas in the region, the project also involves the construction of a water well near the school area, which will benefit all villagers.
A water well will then be drilled to a depth of 60 meters and equipped with a manually operated mechanical pump. Once the construction work is completed, the WATER & SANITATION Committee will maintain the well in cooperation with the school management.
In addition, a rainwater collection system will be installed on the roof of the school. This water can be used by the children for their hygiene, preventing the many diseases caused by the habitual use of dirty and polluted water.
The „Butterfly onlus“ non-profit foundation is in charge of transferring to the ECC-SDOAd-B (Catholic Secretariat of Adigrat) the necessary funds for the realization of the project and of coordinating the project in constant contact with local partners. The ECC-SDOAd-B Catholic Secretariat will implement the project using the resources made available by SANUSLIFE INTERNATIONAL and will be responsible for the opening of the water well and its logistics.

This project foresees the rehabilitation of the KOKHIT water well in the Tsaeda Emba woreda of the Tigrai region for the benefit of some 700 inhabitants of the area.
On average, only 27% of the population in the area has access to safe water, a percentage that tends to drop dramatically. This project, whose total cost is € 4,600, foresees the rehabilitation of a dry well through the removal of old pipes that will be replaced with new ones placed at a suitable depth. A new pump will also be installed and the well will be managed by the WATER & SANITATION Committee.
